Led by internationally recognized refractive surgeon Dr. Ella Faktorovich, our team consistently brings pioneering technologies to San Francisco.

Among these breakthroughs, the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) represents a paradigm shift in cataract and Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) surgery. Unlike traditional intraocular lenses, the LAL allows us to fine-tune your prescription after it is safely implanted inside your eye, letting you “test drive” your vision before it is finalized.

However, achieving this custom-calibrated perfection relies heavily on a critical post-operative partnership: wearing specialized UV-blocking glasses during all waking hours until your final “lock-in” treatment.

The Molecular Science of the LAL

The Light Adjustable Lens is made with special light-sensitive material. When exposed to a certain kind of UV light in our office, a controlled reaction happens that reshapes the lens.

We use a device to shine UV light on exact areas of your lens.

Molecular Migration: The light-sensitive monomers in the targeted area polymerize (bond together), causing the remaining unexposed monomers to predictably migrate into the treated zone.

Physical Reshaping: This microscopic movement alters the lens’s curvature and thickness, effectively changing its refractive power to correct residual nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism.

The Risk of Environmental UV Interference

Because the LAL remains chemically dynamic and highly responsive to UV light until the final treatment, it cannot distinguish between the precise beam of our LDD and the ambient UV radiation present in the environment.

Ultraviolet light is everywhere—emitted by the sun (even on foggy San Francisco days), indoor fluorescent lighting, and digital screens. If your unprotected eye is exposed to these everyday UV sources prematurely, it will trigger uncontrolled, random polymerization. This can warp the lens material, introducing visual distortions and making it clinically impossible for our surgeons to deliver your custom, targeted prescription.

Your Post-Operative Protocol

To safeguard your lens, Pacific Vision Institute provides three pairs of specialized UV-blocking glasses designed to adapt to your daily routine:

Clear Glasses: For comprehensive indoor protection against artificial lighting and ambient UV rays.

Tinted Glasses: For outdoor use, filtering out intense solar radiation.

Bifocal/Reading Glasses: To assist with close-up tasks during the interim adjustment period.

These glasses must be worn during all waking hours. The only temporary exceptions are when you are sleeping, showering, or administering prescribed eye drops—and then, only if you are completely shielded from direct or indirect sunlight.

The Final “Lock-In”

Most patients undergo between two and three brief, painless light treatments, spaced roughly one to two weeks apart. Once you and your surgeon agree that your vision has reached its absolute peak sharpness and contrast, we perform a final “lock-in” treatment. This exposure polymerizes all remaining monomers throughout the entire body of the lens, making it permanently inert and entirely impervious to future UV exposure. At this juncture, you may discontinue wearing the protective glasses.

Trusting the Process, Securing the Outcome

At Pacific Vision Institute, we do not view vision correction as an assembly-line procedure; it is a meticulous, evidence-based science. As a premier destination for advanced refractive surgery—trusted by eye doctors and medical professionals for their own vision correction—we equip our facility with the leading edge of technology to ensure unparalleled clinical outcomes.

By adhering to the post-operative UV protocol, you actively protect the state-of-the-art engineering inside your eye, allowing our team to sculpt your perfect visual prescription.

Contact Pacific Vision Institute today to schedule your comprehensive Light Adjustable Lens consultation and experience the pinnacle of personalized vision.

At Pacific Vision Institute, our commitment to vision correction is anchored in a singular philosophy: executing an unprecedented level of precision to achieve absolute visual optimization.
